From Podcast Mic to Global Stage: A Filipino PT's World Congress Debut

By Johann dela Paz | World Physiotherapy Congress 2025 Reflection

A Triple First in Tokyo

I attended the World Physiotherapy Congress for the first time last May 29–30, 2025, and it was a milestone experience. Not only was it my first time at the Congress, but also my first time moderating in front of a global audience, and my first-ever visit to Tokyo. It truly felt like hitting three birds with one stone.

Moderating a Global Conversation on Social Media

I was honored to co-moderate the session “The Use of Social Media in our Profession” with Mark Merolli (Australia), featuring panelists Joshua Zadro (Australia), Aminat Abolade (Nigeria), and Freya Rodger (World Physiotherapy). As a podcaster, the topic was right in my wheelhouse. It was a powerful reminder of how social media can be a force for education, advocacy, and combating misinformation within the PT community.

Though nerve-wracking at first, especially since English is my second language. I found confidence by watching other moderators and receiving encouragement from peers, panelists, and Mark. When the discussion started flowing, I realized: “I’m really doing this.”

Finding My Voice in a Room of Global Leaders

I also served as a facilitator in a career networking session. At first, I felt out of place. Most facilitators were CEOs, directors, or leaders in educational, non-profit, or global organizations. I was there as a podcaster. But as conversations unfolded, I was reminded that advocacy through storytelling is essential. Podcasting has become a platform for amplifying the voices of underrepresented physiotherapists, and that matters.

Experiencing Tokyo Outside the Congress

Outside the venue, I explored Tokyo’s rich culture—crossing Shibuya, seeing Tokyo Tower, walking through Ginza, and enjoying wagyu steak. The city’s efficient train system and walkable streets made every moment memorable. It was a cultural experience as much as a professional one.

Key Takeaway

There is so much to learn from the challenges and solutions of physiotherapy communities around the world. Local conferences help us understand innovations in our own settings. Attending a global congress opens us to collaboration, perspective, and inspiration far beyond borders.

This experience reaffirmed my passion for advocacy, connection, and the global evolution of our profession.
